What Does John 3:16 Mean? A Look at the Verse

The short answer: John 3:16 means that God loved the whole world so much that He gave His only Son to die for it, so that whoever believes in Jesus will not perish in hell but will have everlasting life. The verses around it show that Jesus came to save, not to condemn.

"For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life." (John 3:16, KJV)

What comes right before John 3:16?

A picture from the Old Testament. Jesus said:

"And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up: That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life." (John 3:14-15)

Our April 28, 2024 sermon asked, why must the Son of Man be lifted up? To die. Jesus was lifted up on the cross so that anyone who looks to Him in faith can live.

What does "should not perish" mean?

It means being saved from death in every sense. The sermon explained that when Adam and Eve sinned, death entered the world. Adam died spiritually, began to die physically, and was in danger of the second death, the lake of fire. John 3:16 promises the opposite: everlasting life.

"We have life, but do you have eternal life? And that's what's important."

Who is "whosoever"?

Anyone. The promise is not limited to one people, one church or one kind of person. Whoever believes in Jesus receives everlasting life.

Did Jesus come to condemn people?

No. The very next verse says so:

"For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved." (John 3:17)

As the sermon put it, Jesus did not come to point out anybody's sins. He came to save. If someone rejects Him and goes to hell, "you cannot blame Jesus. He did everything to keep you out of hell."

What happens to those who don't believe?

John 3:18 is plain: "He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God."

What should a reader do with John 3:16?

Believe it, and act on it. Jesus is the door (John 10:9). You don't just stand looking at a door. You decide to go through it by trusting Jesus as your personal Savior.
