The short answer: No. There is no in-between. Every person spends eternity either present with the Lord in heaven or separated from God in hell. Death is not "six feet down and done."
Isn't death just the end?
No. Many people today say, "I'm just going six feet under." Our October 25 sermon answered that directly:
"You may be going six feet under, but you're going to be going farther than that if you don't put your faith and trust in the Lord."
To say there is no life after death is to call Jesus a liar. Jesus said, "Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice, and shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation." (John 5:28-29)
What did Jesus say about the other side?
Jesus told of a man who died and lifted up his eyes in torment:
"And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame." (Luke 16:24)
As the sermon asked, "How can it be any plainer than that?" There was no waiting room and no second chance, only the place he went when he died.
What about the believer?
For the one who has trusted Jesus, death means being with the Lord. "We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord." (2 Corinthians 5:8) And Paul wrote, "For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain." (Philippians 1:21)
Why does this matter now?
Because there is no in-between later, the decision is made in this life. Jesus offers everlasting life to whoever hears His word and believes on the Father who sent Him (John 5:24). The sermon's closing plea was this: "I don't want anybody to go to hell. I don't want my worst enemy to go to hell."
If you have never settled where you will spend eternity, we would be glad to open the Bible with you.
